Image Caption location – over image vs under image

How do I set the location for an image caption? I have a photo gallery, and it’s putting the captions on top of (“over”) the image. That’s not too bad in desktop, but as the screen gets smaller, especially in mobile size, the caption is completely covering the image. I’d like to have the caption be below the image. I used to be able to do that in other themes, when I selected the image, I could tell it caption top/bottom/etc.
It’s worse with landscape photos, just because there’s less vertical size to work with.

So I tried to add something to the additional CSS section about the wp-caption position, which didn’t make any difference. I suspect I’m not targeting quite the right section. But at least it didn’t break anything!
