How To: Install A WordPress Theme

Installing an Organic Theme onto your site is a straightforward process. The video above demonstrates how to install a theme through your site’s dashboard as well as through FTP (the FTP client in the video is called ‘Transmit’). The instructions below describe the same process.

Note: If you do not have a copy of your theme’s files, then you can download them in your Organic Themes’ account page.

WordPress dashboard

  1. Navigate to Appearance > Themes within your site’s WordPress dashboard.
  2. Click the ‘Add New‘ button at the top of the page.
  3. Then click the ‘Upload‘ button at the top of the page.
  4. Choose the .zip file of your Organic Theme from your computer and click ‘Install Now.
  5. Activate your theme when ready.

Note: If you downloaded your theme files using the Safari browser, then it’s possible that they may have been unzipped automatically. If this is the case, then you will need to re-zip your theme folder (this is the ‘compress’ option in OSX) before attempting the upload.

FTP

  1. Unzip your zipped theme folder.
  2. Access the location on your server which has the ‘wp-content’ folder.
  3. Navigate to wp-content > themes.
  4. Upload your unzipped theme folder to the ‘themes’ folder.
  5. Access your site’s dashboard, and navigate to Appearance > Themes to confirm that the theme has been succesfully uploaded.
  6. Activate your theme when ready.
