To install the Photographer Theme you must first have a working WordPress(.org) installation. For information on installing WordPress, please see Installing WordPress, from the WordPress Codex. Once WordPress has been setup in your hosting environment, you can install your theme one of two ways:
FTP upload: Download and un-zip your theme folder, and using the FTP program of your choice upload the theme folder to the ‘../wp-content/themes/’ folder on your server.
WordPress dashboard: Download your theme and sign into your WordPress dashboard (e.g., yourdomain.com/wp-admin). Navigate to Appearance > Themes > Add New > Upload, and select your zipped theme folder, click “Install Now“. Once the theme is uploaded you will need to activate it, either with the provided link or under Appearance > Themes.
Note: If you use Safari as your primary browser you may find that your theme folder is not zipped after downloading it. You will need to re-compress your theme folder before proceeding with the second installation process.
The Photographer Theme requires the Jetpack plugin to utilize the portfolio custom post type for displaying projects.
Please note that the contact form is powered by Gravity Forms, an excellent premium WordPress contact form plugin (free alternatives include ‘Contact Form 7’ and ‘Jetpack Forms’). If you want to make use of the shop portion of the theme you will need to install WooCommerce.
In order to setup the home page template within the Photographer Theme you will need to create a page and apply the home page template. Then, choose that page as “a static page” within the reading settings (Settings > Reading).
Theme defined image dimensions are as follows (these can be found in the ‘Theme Setup’ function at the top of your functions.php file):
Large Featured Image: 1800x1000px
Medium Featured Image: 1200x1200px
Small Featured Image: 640x640px
The custom header for the Photographer Theme can be uploaded under Appearance > Header, in your theme’s options panel. A custom header image will be displayed on the blog, search and archive pages.
You can setup and manage your menu under Appearance > Menus, in your WordPress dashboard. See the Codex for an explanation of the custom menu system (Note: this tutorial is for WordPress.com, but the process is the same).
Widgets can optionally be added to the sidebar under Appearance > Widgets in your WordPress dashboard. If no widgets are added to the sidebar, the sidebar will not be displayed.
Social media icon links may be added to the footer by creating and saving a menu of custom links within Appearance > Menus, then apply that saved menu to the “Social Menu” location.
Featured posts may be displayed on the home page template slideshow by selecting the “Slideshow Category” under Appearance > Customize > Home Slideshow. A Featured Image must be added to the post.
Simply add content to the “Home” page template for content to be displayed beneath the featured slideshow.
The home sidebar can optionally be displayed by adding Widgets to the Home Sidebar under Appearance > Widgets when content is added to the “Home” page template.
The Slideshow Page Template can be set by creating a page and assigning it to the Slideshow page template. Once this is done using the ‘Add Media’ button, select the option to Create Gallery from the left sidebar. This will bring you to a new gallery window where you can select the images you want to display in your page or upload new ones. When you have selected the images you want to use hit ‘Create New Gallery’ in bottom right corner. You can now re-order your images by dragging and dropping them in the order of your choice and Insert Gallery once you are happy with this. You can easily add and remove images from your slideshow by going back to the gallery (in visual mode, select the gallery and the pencil icon to edit).
Please see our ‘Quick Start Guide’ for setting up the Photographer Theme’s various page templates.
The Blog Page Template can be set by creating a page and assigning it to the default page template. Once this is done navigate to Appearance > Customize > A Static Front Page and assign this page to the Post Page.
Posts of any category may be displayed on the blog page by selecting the “Blog Category” under Appearance > Customize > Blog Options. Featured Images may be added to the post, and additional layout options can be found under Appearance > Customize > Layout & Style.
A portfolio page may be created using the “Portfolio” page template. Please refer to our ‘Quick Start Guide’ for this option.
Additionally, portfolios may be created by adding any post category to your custom menu within Appearance > Menus. You may choose how many columns of posts you would like displayed within the Appearance > Customizer > Portfolio Options.
Additionally, a portfolio page may be created using the “Projects” page template using the portfolio custom post type. This option requires the Jetpack plugin to use the custom post type. You may choose how many columns of project posts you would like displayed within the Appearance > Customizer > Portfolio Options.
Note: You may choose to display a slideshow of images added to a project within the Appearance > Customizer > Portfolio Options. Any images uploaded to the project would be displayed in the slideshow if the option is checked.
